Lomi-Lomi massage, meaning to 'break apart,' is about breaking up knots in the body and in the soul. the massage begins with the therapist asking permission from the therapist's divine source; pre-contact Hawaiians prayed to their gods, contemporary Hawaiians often are Methodist, and so pray to Jesus. The entire massage is delivered as though each touch is delivering mana from heaven. Because Lomi-Lomi is practiced differently on each island, the exact technique will vary with each Kahuna, or teacher. However, all Kahuna share three common ideas about Lomi-Lomi:
1. The massage is a gift of mana from god, and so before and during the massage permission is asked for from God. The asking of permission often takes the form of feeling reverence, and showing that reverence by matching each stroke with the breath.
2. an emphasis on the abdomen as the seat of energy in the body. Abdominal massage is key to releasing bound energy and allowing a person's energy to flow.
3. A whole body massage of some technique, maybe soft, maybe strong, but always from the practitioners heart. Typically the forearms will be used with effleurage, and the upper forearms near the elbow used for very heavy pressure on the back.
